Identity Thief, Tammy, The Heat, this film (filmed once more with her real life husband Ben Falcone) and to a lesser extent Ghostbusters have seen the somewhat self-confessed queen of comedy reliving the same variation of her loud mouthed, dumb or obnoxious persona that initially won her a legion of fans of but has since seen her become a tiresome bore and its actually nice to see such a forced film like The Boss get the reception it deserves.ĭevoid of legitimate laughs and unnatural in the all the wrong ways for a comedy, The Boss is the very worst of McCarthy and the worst example of many of modern day comedies worst attributes from trite story lines, a thinking that the more swearing and toilet humour the better and a collection of characters we neither care for or find funny and while every now and then McCarthy reminds us that she can lead a comedy to moments of gold (last year’s Spy an example) her Michelle Darnell is an utterly irredeemable creation.
It’s an intriguing question and one that now must be seriously asked of comedian Melissa McCarthy, who over the last 5 or so years has dominated the increasingly activate female comedy market thanks to hit turns in films like Bridesmaids and Spy but has also shown an unashamedly tired tendency to reiterate the same character over and over in often diabolically unfunny experiences. How long can one continue to do the same thing over and over before said one becomes bored? “You don’t have any money, you stupid ginger!” Plot – Successful business women Michelle Darnell (McCarthy) finds herself with nothing after being jailed for fraud and her only hope comes in the form of her one time employee Claire (Bell) who might just be able to turn Michelle into a likeable human being.
